About the Book

Les livres 22 a 29, tous parvenus a l'etat fragmentaire par la tradition indirecte des canaux byzantins du Xe s., essentiellement des Excerpta Constantiniana, accessoirement de la Souda, et de quelques auteurs anciens citant occasionnellement Polybe, couvrent une periode particulierement importante (188 a 168 av. J.-C.), de la paix d'Apamee (188 av. J.-C.), imposee par Rome a Antiochos III apres sa defaite a Magnesie-du-Sipyle l'annee precedente, a Pydna, deroute et destruction de l'armee du roi de Macedoine sur la cote occidentale du golfe de Thessalonique a une trentaine de kilometres de sa capitale (22 juin 168 av. J.-C.) et aux evenements qui s'ensuivirent en Asie Mineure et en Egypte. Il s'agit donc des derniers livres des Histoires dans la premiere conception de l'oeuvre par l'auteur, qui voulait conclure l'etude des cinquante-trois annees ayant vu l'achevement de l'expansion et du progres de la puissance romaine (220 a 168 av. J.-C.) " par l'expedition d'Antiochos, surnomme Epiphane, en Egypte, ainsi que par la guerre de Persee et la ruine, du royaume de Macedoine " et montrer " par la, en meme temps ... comment les Romains ont regle chacun de ces conflits de maniere a soumettre tout lemonde habite ", mais decida ensuite de poursuivre son recit jusqu'en 146, date a la fois de la chute de la Carthage punique, de la transformation de la Macedoine en province romaine et, a la suite de la secession des Lacedemoniens de la Confederation acheenne, de la prise et du sac de Corinthe entrainant la dissolution de la Confederation, pour illustrer le caractere ambivalent des consequences de l'imperialisme romain, sans toutefois finalement donner son avis. Dans la biographie de Polybe, comme nous l'apprennent precisement les livres 22 a 29, ces cinq olympiades correspondent a la periode de sa vie ou il a joue un role politique de premier plan auquel sa naissance vers 207 av. J.-C. et son education dans une famille de notables de Megalopolis, petite cite d'Arcadie, lui permettaient de pretendre au sein de la Ligue des Acheens, qui regroupait alors toutes les cites du Peloponnese.
