Un conflitto incredibile quello divampato tra Graz e Venezia tra il 1615 e il 1617. Una guerra - esaminata, in questo contesto, prevalentemente da parte della Repubblica - voluta per talmente tante ragioni da rivelarsi inevitabile. Innanzitutto: quale fu la causa scatenante? Più d'una, una sola formale e certa: i pirati cristiani uscocchi e la loro personale guerra santa contro il Turco. Sì, ma non solo. La signorìa del golfo, ovvero la libertà/non libertà di navigazione in Adriatico, rivendicata una dai veneti e l'altra dagli arciducali. Inoltre, il proponimento della città lagunare di svincolarsi dall'accerchiamento dinastico degli Asburgo, l'ambizione del duca di Savoia e la guerra di corsa del viceré di Napoli. E ancora Gradisca, Marano, Palma, ecc, fu una questione di confine, politica, di prestigio personale, danaro o che altro ancora?

In questo breve saggio storico è stata trattata la guerra di Gradisca e i fatti che l'hanno generata; l'organizzazione militare della Serenissima - dalle guerre d'Italia alla guerra di successione di Mantova - e, naturalmente, alcuni momenti della vita del maestro di campo Pompeo Giustiniani: mercenario genovese - megalomane e sicuro di sé, a ragion veduta, dopo ventisei anni di stimato servizio alla corte di Spagna - il quale pretendeva solamente onore. Onore però che al campo veneto non gli venne tributato. Infatti, per quanto apprezzato dai comandanti civili, i suoi subordinati si dimostrarono restii a considerare sul loro medesimo piano - figuriamoci al di sopra! - un "non veneziano" che dal senato non riusciva a ottenere una patente di riconoscimento: un semplice, quanto rilevante, pezzo di carta che ne imponesse l'autorità ai sottoposti.

Pompeo Giustiniani morì al servizio della Repubblica - così come suo padre e suo zio prima di lui - stimato - anche da chi lo fronteggiava - eppure abbandonato; incastrato nei meccanismi di una Venezia del sospetto che non poteva concedere a nessun capitano l'onore e onere di essere considerato supremo.
