Immer wieder wird dafür auch die Popliteratur verantwortlich gemacht. Kritiker, Leser und Autoren streiten über deren Sinn und Qualität, ohne jedoch zu sagen, was Popliteratur eigentlich ist. Die Popliteratur hat ihren Ursprung in der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Folgen der Industrialisierung, zwei Weltkriege und der Kalte Krieg führten zu einem Zweifel an aufklärerischen und humanistischen Werten. Die Dadaisten zerstörten programmatisch die Sprache und alte literarische Formen. Eine erste Erwähnung findet die Politeratur in den 60er Jahren in den USA. Der Medientheoretiker Leslie A. Fiedler sprach erstmals von einer Popliteratur. Er verweist auf die eigentliche Bedeutung des Wortes: Pop = populär. Rolf Dieter Brinkmann führte 1968 den Begriff in Deutschland ein. Während sich in Amerika diese Entwicklungslinie erfolgreich aufbaute, stieß das Konzept in Deutschland zunächst auf harte Proteste. Der Begriff Pop-Literatur wird ausschließlich genutzt, um von "ernsthafter Literatur" zu unterscheiden. Die Redakteure des Feuilletons wetterten gegen Popliteratur. Verleger Helge Malchow: "Da ging es um Deutungshoheit. Die Kritiker sind die Türsteher zum Reich der ernsten Literatur. Sie sahen ihre Stellung bedroht und reagierten über. Die Genauigkeit, mit der andere Texte und ihre Qualitäten analysiert werden, fehlte in diesen Rezensionen oft." Weitere Beispiele in den 60er Jahren stellten den Protest gegen die Nationalsozi
