About the Book

Nineteenth-century culture was dominated by an ever-expanding world of print. A tremendous increase in the volume of books, newspapers, and periodicals was matched by the corresponding development of the first mass reading public.
It has long been acknowledged that the growth of the popular publishing industry played an instrumental role in the success of most major novelists of the time, such as Dickens and Gaskell, but traditional critical positions have recently expanded into a much broader field concerned with media history, book studies, modes of textual production and consumption, and concepts of popular literature.
"Popular Print Media" makes available a selection of articles from nineteenth-century newspapers, periodicals, and books which are otherwise unavailable except in their original publications.
The collection also includes a significant amount of material that highlights the complex and changing importance of women in and for the nineteenth-century media at large.
Comprised of three volumes divided into six sections, the collection covers the following themes: technology, reading spaces, influence of print, graphic media, serial fiction, periodicals, and the "popular."
