Empirisch untersucht werden befristet, aber auch unbefristet angestellte Arbeitnehmer. Inwieweit wirkt sich ein befristetes Arbeitsverhältnis auf die Leistungsmotivation aus? Ändert sich das Commitment, wenn der Arbeitsvertrag befristet ist? Sind Unterschiede zu erkennen zwischen Menschen, die schon mehrere Befristungen in einem Unternehmen hatten im Gegensatz zu denen, die erstmalig befristet sind? Laut Statistischem Bundesamt haben befristete Arbeitsverträge in den vergangenen 2 Jahrzehnten erheblich zugenommen. Von den insgesamt 30,7 Millionen abhängigen Arbeitnehmern in Deutschland haben rund 2,7 Millionen (8,9%) einen Vertrag auf Zeit. Es ist davon auszugehen, dass die Zahl von sogenannten prekären Arbeitsverhältnissen weiterhin stark zunehmen wird. Die große Bedeutung, konkurrenzfähig am Markt zu sein, führt dazu, dass von Unternehmen erkannt wird, wie wichtig das Commitment, also die Bindung an das Unternehmen, des Arbeitnehmers ist. Im Zuge des Fachkräftemangels, der durch den soziodemographischen Wandel beeinflusst wird, müssen Unternehmen umdenken. Da es immer schwieriger wird, qualifizierte Arbeitskräfte zu finden, sollten sich Unternehmen Gedanken machen, wie sie Mitarbeiter dauerhaft an sich binden und Störquellen erkennen und beseitigen. Dies steht im immensen Widerspruch zur Entwicklung auf dem Arbeitsmarkt mit mehr und mehr prekären Arbeitsverhältnissen.
