Dabei wird auf Platons Ideenlehre und den Gerechtigkeitsbegriff nur soweit eingegangen, wie es zum Verständnis der ökonomischen Themen notwendig ist. Das Aufzeigen der Ausrichtung des Textes an der "Idee des Guten", lässt scheinbar bloß-ökonomische Themen wie "Arbeitsteilung" oder "Besitz" als Momente eben dieser Ausrichtung erkennen und verschränkt sie mit dem Gerechtigkeitsbegriff. Alle ökonomischen Konzepte realisieren die Vorstellung, dass der Bürger mit all seinen dinglichen Bedürfnissen erst in einem auf das Gemeinwohl hin ausgerichteten Staat sein individuell gelungenes Leben (εὐδαιμονία) führen kann. Als Hindernis auf diesem Weg sieht Platon die Maßlosigkeit des einzelnen, die als "Problem des Ökonomischen" das eigentliche Thema der Hausarbeit darstellt. In einer von expansiver Wirtschaft bestimmten Stadt zeigen sich die Folgen des Verlangens nach Luxus und Annehmlichkeiten. Platons "Politeia" gilt als eines der bedeutendsten Werke der politischen Philosophie, nicht aber der ökonomischen. In Beschreibungen und Zusammenfassungen werden die Bestimmung des Gerechtigkeitsbegriffs und die politische Konzeption eines Staats als die wesentlichen Themen der "Politeia" genannt, während auf die ökonomischen Inhalte bestenfalls beiläufig eingegangen wird. Das ist insofern überraschend, als sich die konzeptionelle Staatsgründung in der "Politeia" zuallererst auf ökonomische Prämissen gründet, die so wirkmächtig sind, dass sie die Entwicklung des Staates nachhaltig prägen.
