About the Author: For more than a dozen years, my business card has read, "Karoleigh K. Allison, author, artist, tour director." Now I also stamp "A Queen's Ransom---Crown Jewels by Karoleigh" on the back. It's all true, even if it might come off as bragging. (Does it?) Recently, I have been trying to wade through the piles and heaps of paper collected while going about these pursuits. Author---notebooks, typed pages, rejection letters, note cards, books I mean to write, books I mean to read. Artist---150 to 300 pound watercolor paper, some used and some pristine, as well as an assortment of rice papers and canvases. Tour Director---hundreds of books of info on everywhere in the world, the studying of which really did help me conduct more than 140 tours. Jewelry Design---not so much paper except instruction books on how to weld to how to crochet wire. (Crochet! Don't get me started on the amount of yarn stuffed in odd places around here.) Trying, really, to pitch some of this stuff, I came across an autobiography written when I was ten years old. I sent this, along with other growing up memorabilia, to my son, author- playwright, Alex Dawson. "How about that, Mom? I guess you've always been a writer!" Maybe so. When I began my first novel many years ago, I found the writing process so consuming that I put the 100 pages I had into my safe deposit box, to be taken out and finished when the kids went off to college. At that time, photography and writing for The American Field, the sportsman's weekly newspaper published in Chicago was less demanding. The kids went off to college and I finished the book. Whistlin' Dixie, A Tale of the South (under the surname Nitchman) was published in 1993. The next year I began writing, Whistling in the Dark, not quite a sequel. But again, I stowed the 100 or so pages and traveled the world with a Canon and a Nikon and 40 people on a bus. There have been four cookbooks, in the meantime---Fast Fixin's for Hungry Hunters and Karoleigh's Finger-Lickin, Lip-Smackin', Quick-Fixin' Snackin'Book---don't ask me where I became a fan of the dropped "g." A sometime catering business, Country Gourmet, was mildly successful. Back surgery two years ago literally swept me off my feet. Forced to sit a lot, I finished writing Whistling in the Dark. Whistlin' Dixie will be re-released, along with the Whistlin' Dixie Cookbook. Also, I gathered all those photos and put them together in a picture book called, Promises.
