About the Book

Riley Robinson accompanies his Army family to Germany in 1946 and enrolls in Nürnberg American High School on opening day. Facilities and supplies are minimal, but students and teachers tough it out. A danger that lurks in shadows scares Riley. At the same time, much about Germany captivates him, its language, culture and people, especially a beautiful orphan girl. As a teacher, Riley returns to Nürnberg, where he meets Herr Meier. Under Meier's tutelage and through his travels, Riley expands his world-view and comes to a deeper understanding of himself, of democracy, and what it takes to preserve it.
About the Author: Robert A. (Bob) McQuity was born in Washington, D.C., in 1933, the year that Hitler came to power in Germany. His mother was born of German parents who had emigrated around the turn of the century. He grew up in Fort Worth, Texas, and graduated in 1955 from Texas Wesleyan College. He applied to teach overseas in the Department of Defense Dependent School System in 1958. He was assigned to a junior high school in Kaiserslautern and was reassigned six weeks later to Nürnberg High School. He taught English and journalism at NHS for four years, returning to the United States in 1962. While living in Germany, he visited most of the European countries, including four behind the Iron Curtain. In 1964, he married Jeanette Nayfa. In 2014 the couple celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary. McQuitty has a master's degree from Texas Christian University and a Ph.D from Syracuse University. He taught English at Northeastern (Oklahoma) State University for twenty-seven years, retiring in 1999. For over a decade, McQuitty has served as archivist and historian for the Nürnberg Alumni Association. He has utilized many of the Archive's resources in writing "Prost, Herr Meier," which he says is his first and last novel.
