Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Theaterwissenschaft, Tanz, Note: 1,3, Universität Bayreuth (Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftliche Fakultät), Veranstaltung: Realismus und Naturalismus. Zum Theater des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Strindbergs 1888 verfasstes Drama "Fräulein Julie - Ein naturalistisches Trauerspiel" erregte aufgrund seiner Thematik zunächst großes Aufsehen und Kritik. So wurde eine Aufführung in seinem Heimatland von der dänischen Zensur verhindert, welche das Stück als unsittlich bewertete. Es kam erst sechzehn Jahre später zu einer Premiere in Schweden. In der Tat war das Stück seiner Zeit voraus, denn die Gesellschaft war noch nicht bereit dazu, sich mit der Thematik des Stückes in derartiger Art und Weise auseinander zu setzen. Betrachtet man den Inhalt des Stückes, scheint die anfängliche Ablehnung geradezu bezeichnend für Strindbergs gesellschaftskritisches Drama. Handelt es doch von einer Grafentochter, welche an den gerade erst aufkeimenden neuen Ideologien ihrer Zeit zugrunde geht. Sie zerbricht an Theorien, die noch in einem Widerspruch zur damaligen gesellschaftlichen Situation standen und somit als unausgereift bzw. als verfrüht zum Einsatz gekommen bezeichnet werden könnten. Fräulein Julie, die Tochter eines Grafen, verbringt die Mittsommernacht in der Küche des gräflichen Anwesens mit den Bediensteten. Im Laufe der Nacht entwickelt sich zwischen Julie und Jean, dem Diener des Grafen, eine Beziehung, die schließlich im Geschlechtsakt gipfelt. Die Fragen nach "höher oder niedriger, nach besser oder schlechter, nach Mann oder Frau" bestimmen den anschließenden Machtkampf der Geschlechter, welcher für Julie tragisch endet. Strindberg bearbeitet in diesem Drama die in der Zeit des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts aufgekommenen Theorien über die Stellung der Frau innerhalb der Gesellschaft, sowie die Ständeproblematik, welche vor allem auf der Grundlage von Darwins Entwicklungstheorien erörtert wurden
