About the Book

Bilingual Edition (English-Greek)

An exceptional set of frescoes has been preserved in the Protaton Church. They reflect the flourishing of religious painting that occurred on Mount Athos at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century.

Panselinos managed to tame the vast surfaces of the Protaton Church, creating a set of monumental frescoes. The scenes depicted there have been described by experts as ingenious and revolutionary. They are at once bold and pious, realistic and idealized.

Through a wealth of colors and harmonious color associations, he creates a true picture and visual feast of the 'Heavenly Liturgy' with all the saints acting as ministrants.

Panselinos' work has been used as a source of inspiration in many murals in Greece and in the Balkans.
