Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Das Studium der Eigenschaften von nanostrukturierten magnetischen Filmen hat in den letzten Jahren ein zunehmendes Interesse erfahren, vor allem im Hinblick auf künftige neue Anwendungen in Form magnetischer Speicher oder Sensoren. Ein Ziel ist die Verkleinerung der Leseköpfe von Festplatten, bei denen zur Zeit Flächen mit mehreren Mikrometern Ausdehnung zur Speicherung eines Bits beschrieben werden müssen. Das Volumen der weltweit ausgelieferten magnetischen Festplatten-Speicherkapazität steigt um ca. 40 % jährlich, alle drei Jahre verdoppelt sich die Speicherdichte [Si95]. Ein neues Konzept zum Erzielen höherer Speicherdichten ist etwa die von Chou et al. vorgeschlagene sogenannte "Quantendisk", bei der jedes Bit durch eine separate Einzeldomäne repräsentiert wird. Die Definition der Bitpositionen schon beim Herstellungsprozeß würde neben dem Vorteil kleinerer Schreib-/Leseköpfe deren präzisere Positionierung erlauben und würde den Einfluß durch Nachbarbits wegen des nichtmagnetischen Materials zwischen diesen 1-Bit-Inseln reduzieren. Eine weitere zentrale Anwendung werden MRAMs sein (magnetisches Random-Access-Memory), deren Entwicklung jetzt von mehreren führenden Herstellern magnetischer Speicher intensiv in Angriff genommen wird. Für eine weitere Verkleinerung der Strukturen müssen jedoch zunächst detaillierte Untersuchungen verschiedenster Probengeometrien und der dabei neu auftretenden Phänomene durchgeführt werden, wobei periodische Strukturen niedriger Dimensionalität mit Ausdehnungen von etwa 5 pm bis hinunter zu atomaren Größenordnungen von Interesse sind. Neben Drähten (Streifen) und Inseln (kleinen scheibenförmigen Flächen) werden dabei auch gezielt Probenbereiche mit ferromagnetischen Säulen oder mit kurzen Streifen hergestellt, wodurch sich definierte Magnetisierungsrichtungen und Domänenformen erzeugen lassen.
