Es werden Fragen aufgeworfen, wie weit Menschen bereit sind, einer Autorität zu gehorchen, welche Rolle Geschlecht dabei spielt und warum Gehorsam eine starke Anlage im Menschen ist. Des Weiteren wird untersucht, warum Menschen gegen ihre moralischen Prinzipien verstoßen können, wenn es ihnen von einer Autorität befohlen wird, und welche Faktoren dabei eine Rolle spielen. Gehorsam spielt eine bedeutende Rolle in der Sozialpsychologie und betrifft unser alltägliches Verhalten und den Umgang mit anderen Menschen. Wir sind gewohnt, Autoritäten wie Polizei, Eltern oder Lehrkräften zu gehorchen. Doch Gehorsam kann auch dramatische Folgen haben, wie Kriege und Völkermorde verdeutlichen. Insbesondere nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Phänomen des Gehorsams gegenüber Autoritäten von Forschern untersucht. Wie weit würde ein Mensch gehen, um einer Autorität zu gehorchen? Welche Faktoren beeinflussen die Bereitschaft zum Gehorsam? Gibt es geschlechtsspezifische Unterschiede? Warum ist Gehorsam eine so starke Anlage im Menschen? Wie kann es sein, dass Menschen ihre moralischen Prinzipien verletzen und einer hilflosen Person Schmerzen zufügen, nur weil es ihnen von einer Autorität befohlen wird? Der Psychologe Stanley Milgram führte in den 1960er Jahren ein Experiment durch, das erschreckenderweise zeigte, dass etwa drei Viertel der Durchschnittsbevölkerung unter dem Einfluss einer pseudowissenschaftlichen Autorität bereit waren, einem ihnen unbekannten Menschen bedingungslosen Schaden zuzufügen.
