About the Book

Het is 1252 BCE. Koning Hattusili III (Hattu) is koning van het Grote Hettitische Rijk samen met zijn koningin Puduhepa (Pudu). Pudu is een zeer gerespecteerde staatsvrouw, diplomate, thesaurier, regentes en adviseur van haar man de koning en als zodanig de draagster van de eervolle titel "Tawannanna".
Koning Hattu sterft en Pudu blijft achter als de tawannanna voor haar zoon Suna, die gekroond wordt tot Koning Tudhaliya IV. Suna wordt door de Assyriërs verslagen in een cruciale veldslag met als gevolg enorme territoriale verliezen
Het Rijk wordt verder verzwakt door interne opstand en bedreigingen van buitenaf. Pudu moet er alles aan doen om de verstoorde relaties met Assyrië en Egypte te herstellen.
Suna sterft en zijn oudste zoon Kazanna is de volgende in lijn voor de troon. Pudu is hier fel op tegen omdat zowel Kazanna als zijn broer Arnili geen erfgenaam kunnen verwekken.
Desondanks wordt Kazanna toch tot Koning Arnuwanda III gekroond. Hij is echter niet van plan om veldtochten te leiden en zijn luxe leventje op het spel te zetten, waardoor het Rijk verder in verval raakt.
De bevallige Gapazilani (Gapa) werd als geschikt bevonden om Kazanna's koningin te worden, maar vier jaar na het huwelijk was er nog steeds geen erfgenaam. Het gerucht ging dat het koninklijk huwelijk nooit was voltrokken, wat Gapa de twijfelachtige eer verschafte van "De Maagdelijke Koningin".
Arnili, de jongere broer van Kazanna en een vrouwenversierder pur sang, verleidde Gapa, toen zij op het punt stond te vertrekken op een handelsmissie naar het koninkrijk Ammura om haar minnaar prins Armati te bezoeken. Deze missie had Pudu voor Gapa bedacht in een poging om de dynastie en het Rijk van de ondergang te redden.
Er werd een zoon Kuzim geboren. Arnili is ervan overtuigd dat het zijn zoon is. Reden temeer om zijn persoonlijke agenda aan te passen door zijn broer Koning Arnuwanda af te zetten en zelf de troon te bestijgen. Alle obstakels die mogelijkerwijs zijn plannen konden dwarsbomen werden uitgeschakeld. Hij kroont zichzelf als Koning Suppiluliuma II in de veronderstelling dat hij Gapa tot zijn koningin en tawannanna kan nemen. Hij had echter niet gerekend op de liefde tussen Gapa en Armati.
Zal Arnili met Gapa trouwen en Kuzim als zijn zoon opeisen of zal hij hen beiden uit wrok vervolgen en vermoorden? En hoe reageert de oude Pudu op deze onverwachte wending die haar zo zorgvuldig uitgedacht plannetje in de war schopt?
