Nel libro sono narrate le vicende di un uomo (Quintus Poppaedius Silo) che, mosso da puro spirito di libertà e giustizia, condusse, nel 91 a.C., quasi tutti i popoli Italici, primi tra questi i suoi Marsi, a rivendicare, in pace prima ed in guerra poi, i propri diritti civili e sociali, al Senato di Roma.
Per questo sogno di libertà, giustizia ed uguaglianza, che essi chiamarono "ITALIA", quell'uomo sacrificò la propria vita, insieme ad altri 300.000 Italiani. Grazie alle loro gesta ed alla loro morte, quel sogno diventò realtà, cambiando per sempre il loro destino, quello di Roma, quello dell'Italia e quello del mondo come noi oggi lo conosciamo.
Per descrivere in maniera dettagliata, esaustiva e storicamente corretta le vicende del Bellum Marsicum (anche noto come Bellum Italicum e poi Guerra Sociale), nel libro sono dapprima rese evidenti le ragioni che spinsero i popoli Italici verso una sanguinosa guerra contro Roma, ripercorrendo l'evolversi delle loro relazioni con tale emergente potenza e con i suoi più importanti rappresentanti, tra cui Publio Cornelio Scipione, Marco Fulvio Flacco, i fratelli Gracchi, Marco Livio Druso, ..., a partire dalla fine del III° secolo a.C. e sino al 91 a.C., anno della esplosione del conflitto. La narrazione prosegue con la restituzione dei momenti e delle convulse vicende che si susseguirono durante i tre anni di lotta tra l'Italia e Roma, che vedranno contrapposte ai valenti e coraggiosi Generali Italici (Q. Poppaedius Silo, C. Papius Mutilus, C. Vidacilius, ...) alcune tra le più importanti e famose personalità dell'intera storia di Roma (C. Marius, L. Cornelius Sulla, Q. Caecilius Metellus, M. Tullius Cicero, C. Iulius Caesar, Cn. Pompeius Strabo, Cn. Pompeius Magnus, ...). Il libro si conclude quindi con una sintetica analisi degli impatti che tale conflitto determinerà sulla storia di Roma, dell'Italia e dell'intero Occidente.
Questa può senz'altro considerarsi l'opera più completa, strutturata e dettagliata, mai scritta sugli eventi e sul processo civile, politico, militare e sociale sottostanti il Bellum Marsicum.
