About the Book

Als der Jager Ulaajuk in den 1960er Jahren nach Kuujjuaraapik, das sudlichste Dorf in Nunavik, an der Grenze von Tundra und Taiga, kommt, um seine Felle zu verkaufen, verliebt sich die junge Inuk Saullu in ihn. Als Ulaajuk ihr die Gebiete zeigen will, aus denen er kommt, verlassen die beiden Inuit Kuujjuaraapik und verbringen in Begleitung ihrer qim- miit, zwei Gespannen von jeweils zehn Schlittenhunden, mehrere Jahre in den Weiten von Nunavik, wo sie von der Jagd auf Robben, Belugas und Karibus leben. Als sie – Saullu hat inzwischen eine Fehlgeburt gehabt – nach Kuujjuaraapik zuruckkehren, stellen sie fest, dass das Dorf sich sehr verandert hat. Hauser sind gebaut und Straßen angelegt worden, Geschaf- te haben sich angesiedelt, was aber vor allem auffallt, ist die vollige Abwe- senheit der Hunde. Beamte der Securite du Quebec waren gekommen und hatten alle Hunde erschossen, auch diejenigen von Saullus Vater. Ulaajuk und Saullu kehren in ihr Lager zuruck. Als Saullu erneut schwanger wird, will sie ihr Kind in Kuujjuaraapik zur Welt bringen. In der Nacht nach der Geburt ihrer Tochter stirbt ihr Vater. Am Tag seiner Beerdigung kommen morgens wieder Polizisten ins Dorf und erschießen Ulaajuks Hunde. Jahrzehnte spater wird die Anwaltin Eve Beaulieu von ihrer Kanzlei an die Cote-Nord geschickt, um den Inuk Uqittuq Ainalik zu verteidigen, der vier ehemalige Beamte der Securite du Quebec getotet haben soll. Unter- stutzt wird sie von ihrer Kollegin und Freundin Nadege, die fur sie uber die Opfer und den mutmaßlichen Tater recherchiert. Mit ihrem Hund Qimmik fliegt sie nach Sept-Iles, doch der alte Inuk schweigt nicht nur bei der ersten Befragung hartnackig, sondern auch bei allen weiteren. Als er endlich doch sein Schweigen bricht, erfahrt Eve, die als Baby adoptiert worden war, Dinge, die ihr Leben grundlich auf den Kopf stellen. Michel Jean wendet sich in diesem Roman erneut einem kaum be- kannten Kapitel in der Geschichte der Ureinwohner von Quebec zu: die massenweise Erschießung der Schlittenhunde der Inuit in den 1960er Jah- ren durch Beamte der Securite du Quebec, wodurch sie gehindert werden sollten, weiterhin unkontrolliert in den Weiten von Nunavik zu jagen. Da- bei gelingen ihm erschutternde Szenen, die unmittelbar zu Herzen gehen.
