C'était l'époque des bals costumés, de Metropolis et de Josephine Baker; des découvertes scientifiques cruciales, de la verve littéraire et du chaos politique engendré par la République de Weimar. Après le succès fracassant de Hollywood dans les années 1930 et Jazz. Dans le New York des Années folles, l'illustrateur Robert Nippoldt s'est associé à l'auteur Boris Pofalla pour évoquer la métropole trépidante et libre qu'était Berlin dans les années 1920.

Composé comme une visite touristique de la ville à travers le temps, La nuit tombe sur le Berlin des Années folles raconte la dimension urbaine et les épisodes complexes d'une décennie de mutations, des longues artères illuminées par le nouveau réseau d'éclairage électrique aux planchers qui vibrent dans toute la ville au rythme du fox-trot et du tango. Faisant montre de sa maîtrise graphique de la lumière, de l'ombre et de l'expression, grâce à la patine que confère le tirage argentique, Nippoldt alterne portraits et paysages pour montrer le décor changeant et les centres dynamiques de cette capitale en plein essor et en pleine industrialisation, ainsi que les personnages extraordinaires qui peuplaient ce vivier artistique, scientifique et idéologique.

Animé par une curiosité sincère pour les excentriques et marginaux, qui façonnèrent cette époque entêtante, autant que pour les «puissants», Nippoldt dresse le portrait de personnalités comme Lotte Reiniger, Christopher Isherwood, Albert Einstein, Kurt Weill, Marlene Dietrich et George Grosz, mais aussi de Thea Alba, «la femme aux dix cerveaux», de Magnus Hirschfeld, le «Einstein du sexe», et du fameux criminel local Adolf Leib. C'est ainsi que le livre pose un regard particulier sur certains des phénomènes culturels et politiques les plus marquants de l'époque, et s'attache aux plus grandes vedettes du grand écran ou à l'atmosphère chaotique engendrée par le gouvernement de Weimar.

Au-delà des protagonistes et des lieux, le livre saisit surtout l'esprit incomparable et ineffable d'un endroit et d'un moment, d'une époque suspendue entre deux guerres mondiales et d'un pays tiraillé entre l'audace de céder à la joie de vivre et la noirceur envahissante du national-socialisme. Avant que la nuit tombe, Nippoldt nous montre tout: le feu des projecteurs et les murmures en coulisses, les usines qui sortent de terre et la physique théorique, le rugissement des stades et le silence feutré des théâtres, les chansons des Comedian Harmonists, les satires de George Grosz et l'icône Marlene Dietrich, qui ébranle les caractéristiques du genre avec sa cigarette, son chapeau haut-de-forme, son smoking, et son fameux regard aguicheur.
