Inhaltsangabe: Zusammenfassung: Die Relevanz von Fernsehnachrichten Den Fernsehnachrichten kommt aus einer Reihe von Gründen in modernen Gesellschaften eine besondere Rolle zu: Erstens ist die Glaubwürdigkeit des Fernsehens im Vergleich zu Hörfunk und Presse relativ hoch. Das absolute Vertrauen in die Berichterstattung des Fernsehens mag zwar gering sein, insgesamt wird das Fernsehen jedoch für das glaubwürdigste Medium gehalten. Zweitens ist die Bindung der Rezipienten an das Fernsehen sehr ausgeprägt. Von allen Medien wird das Fernsehen für am unentbehrlichsten gehalten. Drittens ist die Reichweite der Fernsehnachrichten im Vergleich zu anderen Informationsangeboten ungleich größer. Fernsehnachrichten sind ein Teil der alltäglichen Kommunikationskultur und haben als Informationsquelle seit Jahren einen Vorsprung vor den anderen tagesaktuellen Medien. Viertens verfügt das Fernsehen über eine Fülle von Präsentationsmöglichkeiten im audiovisuellen Bereich und fünftens werden dem Fernsehen besondere Wirkungsqualitäten zugeschrieben. In den letzten Jahren hat sich die Konkurrenz zwischen den Fernsehsendern im Bereich der Abendnachrichten verschärft. Die Bedeutung der Fernsehnachrichten sowohl für die Zuschauer (als Quelle politischer Informationen) als auch für die Sender (Imageverbesserung, Steigerung der Einschaltquote) muss vor dem Hintergrund der deutschen Fernsehtraditionen gesehen werden. Empirische Studien konstatieren dabei deutliche Unterschiede zwischen den Nachrichtensendungen der privaten und der öffentlich-rechtlichen Anbieter. Das Thema Qualität ist sowohl in der rundfunkpolitischen als auch in der (medien-) wissenschaftlichen Diskussion in letzter Zeit in das Zentrum des Interesses gerückt. Mit dem Trend zur Privatisierung und Kommerzialisierung des Fernsehens nimmt laut McQUAIL die öffentliche Kontrolle über die Massenmedien ab.
