Dans ce recueil de nouvelles, c'est Jean Lorrain, le journaliste et chroniqueur mondain dévoilant les secrets de fortune et d'alcôve du tout-Paris 1900 dans les pages du Courrier Français et de l'Echos de Paris, qui dresse le portrait de quelques hommes: vies mouvementées de vils séducteurs et de chasseurs de dot, menteurs accomplis, amants désillusionnés, maris infidèles, artistes ambitieux... auxquels les femmes succombent passionnément. Chaque nouvelle offre un instantané cruel, petit chef-d'oeuvre virulent et ironique sur la séduction et ses trahisons. Un homme venait d'entrer. Très grand, la taille merveilleusement mince et souple dans la cambrure exagérée de l'habit noir, musclé pourtant, comme l'attestait la vigueur des mains qu'il venait de poser sur le bord de la loge; des mains d'aventuriers aux doigts spatules et forts qu'aucun bijou ne dénonçait aux regards; la tête classique et d'une régularité presque irritante était celle d'une étude italienne. Sauf les cheveux noirs trop lustrés et pommadés, l'homme était d'une élégance impeccable; une femme l'accompagnait, une Italienne comme lui à en juger par son type sinueux et morbide de brune cruelle. C'étaient les mêmes lèvres rouges, la même pâleur mate, le même front entêté, étroit et bestial sous les grappes savamment ondulées des cheveux noirs; mais la flexibilité de la taille et du cou ravissait. Avec des ondulations de vipère, la femme venait de glisser et émergeait enfin nue d'un merveilleux manteau de soir; elle s'asseyait maintenant. Elle a de bien belles perles ! hasardait, après un coup de lorgnette un des quatre habits noirs. - Et de plus belles émeraudes, était-il riposté, avez-vous regardé ses prunelles ? La marquise a les plus splendides yeux verts et le rare est que les cils en sont noirs; d'ailleurs ils sont gris le matin, ce sont des yeux d'eau changeante. - Elle est marquise? - Comme il est prince. Le couple se vaut, elle sera peut-être duchesse demain. - Pas mariée alors ? Bah ! ils le seront peut-être cet hiver à Nice, quoique Nice soit bien près d'ici. Pour les besoins de la cause ils sont tour à tour mari et femme, frère et soeur ou amant et maîtresse, cela dépend du ponte...
