La glándula mamaria se encuentra en la pared torácica anterior entre las costillas. En el lado medial es adyacente o cubre parcialmente el esternón, afuera se cierra y alcanza el borde de la línea axilar anterior del músculo pectoral mayor. El cuerpo de la glándula tiene la forma de un disco convexo con una superficie irregular, en cuya parte frontal hay protuberancias y depresiones llenas de tejido adiposo. La superficie posterior más lisa limita la fascia del músculo pectoral mayor, pero los bordes del disco también son irregulares, a veces formando crestas con mayor frecuencia hacia la axila. El parénquima de la glándula mamaria está representado por glándulas tubulares alveolares complejas reunidas en lóbulos pequeños, a partir de los cuales se forman lóbulos grandes. El tamaño de los lóbulos de leche varía de 1 a 2 cm de largo y 1,5 a 2 cm de ancho (glándulas mamarias pequeñas) a 5 a 6 cm de largo y 3 a 4 cm de ancho (glándulas grandes). El número de lóbulos en la glándula varía entre 6-8 y 20-24. Cada lóbulo tiene un conducto excretor de leche. Algunos canales pueden coalescer antes de salir de la superficie del pezón, por lo que el número de orificios en el pezón puede variar entre 12 y 20.
