About the Book

Rabbit Farming in India is of recent origin. It has proliferated in hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Tamilnadu during last over two decades. It opens new vistas of self employment to the educated youth in particualr and to others in general. It can be adopted as a whole time profession or can be taken up as backyard rearing to supplement ones income. However, it requires specialised training and technial skill because the pedigree record of the different lines of the parest stock nust be maintained. Secondly, the animal being very delicate and susceptible to sudden strains and stresses, its not that easy to raise rabbits. It was only with the import of german of Angora strain in late 60s that rabbit farming in India witnessed a revolution. But the farming techniques adopted by teh untrained farmer were slipshod and haphazard. With the import of German Angora strain by Himachal governent in foreign countries coul bot be relevant as such under Indian conditions. Moreovr the western literature available mainly drew its infernces from meat rebbitries. Whereas, in India it is the wool rabbit that have come to be popularized for farming. The present book is a pioneer work on Rabbit farming in India. The study from practical experience in German Angora Rabbit Breeding and researh work conducted on economic aspect of the enterprise under India conditions. The book will serve as a handbook to thse interested in taking up Rabbit farming a profession and as a source book for researchers and teachers alike.
