Tout à l'heure, il partira pour une de ces expéditions clandestines dé l'autre côté de la frontière espagnole qui sont le métier secret de tant d'hommes au pays basque. Dans la salle basse, sa mère Franchita songe. II s'est déjà fait une solide réputation de joueur de pelote et le voilà maintenant qui tâte de la contrebande. Il suit les traditions de sa race, alors pourquoi s'inquiéter de l'avenir ? De plus il s'entend bien avec Gracieuse, fille de Dolorès Detcharry qui fut l'amie d'enfance de Franchita jusqu'à la fugue de celle-ci avec l'étranger, le père de Ramuntcho. Le mariage des enfants serait une belle revanche sur cette Dolorès orgueilleuse et bigote.Oui, Gracieuse aime Ramuntcho et lui promet de l'épouser quand il reviendra du service militaire. Seulement la séparation dure trois ans, pendant lesquels Dolorés se déchaîne: plutôt que de la donner au fils de Franchita, elle préfère l'enfermer au couvent.D'un couvent ne peut-on sortir ? C'est Arrochlcoa, le propre frère de Gracieuse, qui en suggère l'idée. Projet sacrilège mais bien tentant pour un amoureux. C'est sur un enlèvement manqué que s'achève ce roman célèbre où Pierre Loti dépeint avec talent l'âme et le pays basques.Louis-Marie-Julien Viaud dit Pierre Loti est un écrivain et officier de marine français, né le 14 janvier 1850 à Rochefort et mort le 10 juin 1923 à Hendaye. Pierre Loti, dont une grande partie de l'oeuvre est d'inspiration autobiographique, s'est nourri de ses voyages pour écrire ses romans, par exemple à Tahiti pour Le Mariage de Loti (Rarahu) (1882), au Sénégal pour Le Roman d'un spahi (1881) ou au Japon pour Madame Chrysanthème (1887). Il a gardé toute sa vie une attirance très forte pour la Turquie, où le fascinait la place de la sensualité il l'illustre notamment dans Aziyadé (1879), et sa suite Fantôme
