Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Komparatistik, Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Note: 1, Universität Wien, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "Drei Drähte, auf denen Tortillas trocknen, und jeder kann durch" - so beschreibt der US-amerikanische Schriftsteller T.C. Boyle in einem Interview die "durchlässige" Grenze zwischen Mexiko und den Vereinigten Staaten, umgangssprachlich auch "Tortilla Curtain" genannt. Diese Grenze steht - sowohl in ihrer physischen als auch metaphorischen Bedeutung - im Vordergrund seines 1995 erschienenen gleichnamigen Romans; anhand ihr skizziert Boyle amerikanische Werte, die (teils paranoiden) Ängste und die Ausländerfeindlichkeit einer gehobenen weißen Mittelschicht gegenüber illegalen Einwanderern, aber auch Armut und Umweltzerstörung. Die Reaktionen auf Boyles Werk in den USA sind nach wie vor kontrovers; neben viel Zustimmung erhielt der in Kalifornien lebende Autor auch offene Ablehnung. Da das Thema "Raum und Grenze" im Globalisierungsdiskurs einen wichtigen Platz einnimmt und einen ganz eigenen Zugang zu Fragen wie Identität und Differenz gestattet (vgl. Müller-Funk), soll auch in der vorliegenden Arbeit die Grenzthematik im Zentrum stehen. Dabei wird die in seinem Werk "Die Struktur literarischer Texte" formulierte Raumtheorie des russischen Literaturwissenschaftlers und Semiotikers Juri Michailowitsch Lotman das theoretische Gerüst bilden, auf dem die Analyse des Romans und seiner Figuren aufbaut. Nach einer kurzen Darstellung der wesentlichen Punkte in "Die Struktur litararischer Texte" sollen die verschiedenen im Roman beschriebenen Grenzen und -phänomene und deren Auswirkungen auf ihr Umfeld mit Hilfe dieser Theorie analysiert werden. Dabei wird vor allem die Frage, wie die ProtaginistInnen sich im (Grenz-)raum bewegen und welche Grenzerfahrungen sie machen, im Mittelpunkt stehen.
