About the Book

"The United States is a controversial issue that implies the construction and manipulation of imaginaries commonly plagued by prejudices, but also by divergences and inconsistencies. This book explores the creative mechanisms of representation through which Dominican and Cuban intellectuals repositioned themselves throughout the 20th century in front of an imagined American otherness, either from the literate city or from its periphery. The issue of the United States calls for a self-affirmation of identity and difference that weighs on the disparity of power between the two Americas. The space for debate on the United States rarely meant a dialogue with that country. The peripheral look at 'the neighbor from the North' has implied much more the need to articulate a discourse on one's own difference or similarity in relation to it, than an attempt to deepen a characterization of the North American nation, which is often perceived as 'other'.

This essay does not intend to limit itself to the elaboration of an inventory of anti-imperialism or its opposite in these Caribbean nations. Its intention is that of a critical effort to understand the processes of subalternity. Thinking about the process by which the metropolitan signifier functions in the Dominican Republic and Cuba as a mobilizer or trigger to deploy multiple discourses, would make this book akin to a tradition of critical work on cultural production originating from the periphery to investigate the colonial condition itself. However, the intention here is to focus on the discursively productive mechanism by which both islands make use of the American referent to allow positioning and displacements beyond a literal referentiality."
