Du fait de ses fonctions de rédacteur en chef du journal Le Soir dit « volé » entre 1940 et 1943, Raymond de Becker (1912-1969) est inscrit dans la mémoire collective comme un des chefs de file de la collaboration intellectuelle belge.
Ce moment de son itinéraire ne rend toutefois pas compte de l'ensemble du parcours intellectuel, religieux et politique de l'auteur du Livre des Vivants et des Morts (1942). Polémiste redoutable, de Becker s'imposa rapidement comme un des intellectuels les plus en vue de sa génération, à tout le moins dans les milieux catholiques, européistes et « non conformistes ». L'ami d'Henry Bauchau et d'Hergé, mais aussi de Jacques Maritain et d'Emmanuel Mounier, entendait, à l'instar de toute une ggénération traumatisée par la Grande Guerre et par ses conséquences, rénover les cadres d'une société jugée sclérosée par la démocratie parlementaire, le libéralisme et le capitalisme. Après avoir hésité entre contemplation et action, il prit distance avec le catholicisme et s'engagea dans des voies plus politiques. Son intérêt croissant pour les sujets liés à l'unité et à la paix du continent européen alla de pair avec une fascination pour les nouveaux régimes totalitaires, à commencer par celui de l'Allemagne.
Incarcéré à la Libération jusqu'en février 1951, de Becker fut contraint de s'exiler, choisit Lausanne puis Paris. Aux côtés de Raymond Abellio ou de l'équipe de Planète de Louis Pauwels, il poursuivit une activité d'essayiste et de journaliste autour de thèmes comme le cinéma, l'homosexualité, la psychanalyse, le paranormal ou les philosophies orientales.
About the Author: Olivier Dard est professeur d'histoire contemporaine à l'Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV).
Collaborateur scientifique à l'Université catholique de Louvain, Étienne Deschamps y est membre du Centre d'étude d'histoire de l'Europe contemporaine.
Geneviève Duchenne est professeur invitée à l'Université catholique de Louvain et aux Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis de Bruxelles où elle enseigne, entre autres, les fondements historiques et culturels de la construction européenne.
