About the Book

It was my father's dream to escape the strongholds of poverty and to defy the world's dismal expectations of him as a Black man in America. It was his dream that by pure circumstance I came to adopt it as my own. I wasn't perfect and made multiple mistakes along the way. But through me the beauty of my father's dream has been reborn, and through these pages it is my hope that it lives forever.
About the Author: A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Ean Garrett received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Legal Communications and Political Science in 2008, from the historically Black college Howard University, located in Washington, D.C. While there he also served as the Founder/Director of the Howard University Chapter of Students for Barack Obama and also was a recipient of the Sallie Mae American Dream and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton Congressional Black Caucus Scholarships.
Ean holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Nebraska College of Law, which he received in 2011. He served as the President of the Black Law Students Association and Multi-Cultural Legal Society. Ean also successfully completed international coursework at CBL International's Law School in Dubai, U.A.E., in 2011/2012.
Ean has been heavily invested in furthering the causes of at-risk youth. Working with Metropolitan Community College and the North Omaha Foundation, he coordinated conferences aimed at increasing the graduation rates of underprivileged demographics. Ean has previously served as a Congressional lobbyist on behalf of Trio/Upward Bound Programs. He also spends time working with programs that benefit inner-city youth.
Over the years Ean has served as a national spokesperson for MENTOR: National Mentoring Partnership, speaking on behalf of the organization at various venues throughout the country. As a result of his work in mentoring, Ean has been recognized in Imagine magazine, Mott Mosaic magazine, and has also been featured in the Handbook of Youth Mentoring by David L. Dubois. He continues to be a mentor, mentee, and advocate for the benefits of mentoring.
"This exploration of determination and optimism-against seemingly impossible odds-is an outstanding and touching memoir that resonates long after the last page." -- ForeWord Clarion Review
