About the Book

Globally, cities are changing and economies are fluctuating. Along with these changes we are experiencing attitudinal shifts regarding community planning initiatives. A recent survey revealed that over 80 percent of individuals feel their community is getting worse or showing no progress, with many residents expressing no hope for change. In Rebuilding A Jewel, the reader is immersed in revitalization and dynamic programs in locations around the world, such as Israel, England and Louisiana (USA). Historic preservation planning in these programs is examined, and tools are presented that focus on decreasing and sometimes eliminating challenges that frequently occur among various participating stakeholders. Rebuilding A Jewel provides preservationists and others working in the field with a template for renewing perspectives and achieving planning goals.
About the Author: Lydia K. Atubeh is the owner of Ke'n L'chaim Llc (a Historic Preservation and Interior Design consulting company). Atubeh is a member of the DeKalb County Historic Preservation Commission (Decatur, GA), a member of the United States/International Council on Monuments and Sites (US/ICOMOS) and has taught International Heritage Preservation at Georgia State University (Atlanta, GA). " True Visionaries Understand, Respect and Value design of the past, and who's goal is to celebrate the old and incorporate it into New. Lydia is that Visionary. She educates and inspires us, not only to change our perceptions of the Old as something worthless, but to view it instead as a "Diamond in the Rough." Her book guides us on the exciting and rewarding journey of "Rebuilding a Jewel." --Mister Billy B., Celebrity Makeup artist and host of HGTV's Hometown Renovation "Successful revitalisation of historic places has to be founded on understanding what matters and why, and to whom. With its focus on practical ways to engage communities, this book is a great starting point for anyone embarking on a revitalisation project." --Kate Clark, Visiting Fellow at School of Business, Leadership and Enterprise, University Campus Suffolk, United Kingdom & author of Informed Conservation " Having been involved with the restoration of numerous historic landmarks around the world, I am heartened to see the enlightened approach and dedication that Lydia shows in rebuilding historic communities. Rebuilding a Jewel reminds us how valuable our heritage is, defining who we are today. " --Timothy Corrigan, Principal of Timothy Corrigan Inc., Top 100 Architectural Digest Interior Designer and author of An Invitation to Chateau du Grand-Lucé
