Francis Cabell Brown Professor of International Law at Georgetown University Law Center. Serves as a Judge on the Administrative Tribunal of the International Monetary Fund and former President of the Inter-American Development Bank's Administrative Tribunal. Former President of the American Society of International Law.
Was appointed (2012) to a five-year term at the World Bank Inspection Panel and served as Chairperson (2003-2007), a Vice Presidential level position. Associate General Counsel for International Law at the US Environmental Protection Agency (1990-1992), where she established a new Division of International Law. Served as a US Special Legal Advisor to the North American Commission on the Environment (1996-2002). Member of the United Nations Environment Programme's International Advisory Council on Environmental Justice.
Has received many prizes for her scholarship and legal achievements. In 2010 the American Society of International Law (ASIL) awarded her the Manley O. Hudson Medal. Her other awards include the Elizabeth Haub Medal from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Free University of Brussels for international environmental law, the ASIL Prominent Woman in International Law Award, the American Bar Association Award to an individual for distinguished achievements in Environmental Law and Policy, the International Environmental Law award from the Center for International Environmental Law, and the American Society of International Law's Certificate of Merit for her book In Fairness to Future Generations, which has been published in English, Japanese, French, Spanish, and Chinese. The Indian Society of International Law elected her as an Honorary Member (2009).
Has been a member of many international editorial boards, including the American Journal of International Law, Journal of International Economic Law, Asian Journal of International Law, Indian Journal of International Law, Transnational Journal of Environmental Law, Journal of International Environmental Agreements, and Brazilian Environmental Law Journal. Served on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Encyclopedia of Public International Law, prepared by the Max Planck Institute, and is on the Scientific Advisory Board to the Max Planck Encyclopedia of International Procedural Law.
Has been a director, trustee, or advisor for international organizations, including the Cousteau Society in France, the Japanese Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, and the United Nations University. Member of the Advisory Council for the Asian Society of International Law.
Received an A.B. from Stanford University with Great Distinction, LL.B. (J.D.) from Harvard Law School, Ph.D. in political science from the University of California Berkeley, Doctorate honoris causa from Heidelberg University, and Honorary Doctor of Laws from Chicago-Kent College of Law.
