Assistant, maître-assistant, maître de conférences et professeur à la faculté des sciences juridiques, politiques et sociales de Tunis (Université de Carthage depuis 1994); doyen de la faculté des sciences juridiques, politiques et sociales de Tunis (depuis août 2014 jusqu'à décembre 2017); directeur du département de droit privé et de sciences criminelles à la faculté des sciences juridiques, politiques et sociales de Tunis: avril 2005-juin 2008; responsable du maste en droit des affaires de 2002 à 2010, responsable du maste en droit des entreprises et des affaires de 2010 à 2012; co-fondateur et co-responsable du maste de recherches en droit international et relations Maghreb-Europe à partir de l'année 2012 jusqu'à 2014. Directeur de l'unité de recherches « relations internationales privées » de 2011 à 2014.
Professeur invité dans plusieurs universités étrangères, en particulier à Beyrouth (Liban), à Aix Marseille et à Besançon (France). Arbitre en droit interne et en droit du commerce international, ad hoc ou institutionnel (CCI, CCAT etc.).
Tullio Treves, born in Tucuman (Argentina) in 1942 from Italian parents. Citizen of Italy and Argentina, he lives in Italy.
Degree in Law, University of Milan (1964). "Libera docenza" in international law (1969). Doctor honoris causae, Universidad Tecnológica del Peru. Lecturer of International Law at the University of Pavia (1969-1971). Lecturer and, since 1972, Professor at the University of Sassari (dean, 1973-1974). Professor at the University of Turin (1974-1980) and, from 1980 to 2012, at the University of Milan. Currently Emeritus Professor of the University of Milan.
Teachings in numerous academic and other institutions in all continents, including the Hague Academy of International Law, the University of California at Berkeley School of Law, the UN-sponsored courses of international law in The Hague, Quito, Addis Ababa, Montevideo, Santiago de Chile, the Universities of Paris I and II, of Aix en Provence, of Madrid, the Castellon Bancaja Euromediterranean Courses of International Law (1997 and 2007 - general course), the Rhodes Academy for Maritime Law and Policy (every year since its inception in 1995), the Instituto Ortega y Gasset in Madrid, the Cursos de Invierno de dereito internacional (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 2010), the Geneva Master in International Disputes Settlement (every year since 2012), Member of the Italian delegations: to the Third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea and Coordinator of the French Language Group of that Conference, to the Law of the Sea PrepCom, to the early sessions of the International Seabed Authority, to the UN Conference on the Law of Treaties between States and International Organization. From 1984 to 1992, Legal Adviser to the Italian Mission to the United Nations in New York. In this capacity he chaired various Working Groups of the Sixth Committee and participated in the Italian Delegation to the Security Council.
Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (1996-2011), being twice the President of the Seabed Disputes Chamber, including during the deliberation of the Advisory Opinion of 1 February 2011 on the Responsibilities and Liabilities of Sponsoring States. Later twice judge ad hoc in the same Tribunal.
Member of arbitral tribunals in State to State disputes (Bangladesh-India, Timor Leste-Australia, Malta-Sao Tomé and Principe). Counsel for France, Finland, Peru, Colombia, Russia, Venezuela, Kazakhstan before the International Court of Justice and International Arbitral Tribunals. Since 2012, Public International Law Senior Consultant at the international law firm Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt and Mosle. Member of the Curatorium of The Hague Academy of International Law, of the Institute of International Law, and of learned societies including the American, French and Italian Societies of International Law.
Editor of the Rivista di diritto internazionale privato e processuale and of Comunicazioni e studi; member of the Boards of the Max-Planck Encyclopedia of Public International Law, The Law and Practice of International Courts and Tribunals, Ocean Development and International Law Journal, Il diritto marittimo, Revue belge de droit international, Revista española de derecho internacional.
Correspondent for Italy of the Journal du droit international. Author of numerous books and articles in four languages covering various aspects of public and private international law, with special emphasis on the Law of the Sea and the Settlement of International Disputes.
