About the Book

Cement has been a crucial building material for the infrastructure of all human advancements. Major infrastructure includes built environment for residences and commercial spaces, industries, power generation, and transport. There will be an increased demand for building materials, especially cement and steel, to meet the growing infrastructure aspirations of developing economies. This makes cement manufacturing a part of the socio-technical system that requires reconfiguration of manufacturing technologies and management practices. As nations worldwide continue to commit to decarbonising their economies, hard-to-abate manufacturing sectors like cement will pose challenges in this low-carbon or net-zero transition. Therefore, it is important to understand the current and future scenario of the sector in short to medium term, especially in developing economies like India. In addition, the current chapter presents existing low-carbon strategies along with upcoming technologies that act as the rationale for choosing the topic.

An overview of the cement industry

Concrete is the second most consumed substance after water, with cement as a key ingredient. The proportion of cement-based materials in the total global material use increased from 7% in 1950 to 30% in 2005 (Scrivener et al., 2016)26/06/2023 14:21:00. Further, global demand for cement is expected to increase from 4.6 Billion Tonnes in 2015 to 6 Billion Tonnes in 2050 (Scrivener et al., 2016). Almost 90% of the demand will emerge from developing and low- income countries, with China and India being major consumers accounting for 32% and 22% of the demand respectively (Scrivener et al., 2016). China and India also account for two-thirds of cement production in the world (Andrew, 2018; Napp et al., 2014), and this trend is expected to continue until 2050. Cement manufacturing is an energy and emission-intensive process, contributing 5-8% of total anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions (Andrew, 2018; Brunke & Blesl, 2014; Talaei et al., 2019; Wesseling et al., 2017).
