The sky was gray and it was as dark as night even though it was nine o'clock in the morning, the wipers slapped against the windshield with a steady rhythmical movement.
A steady rain beat against the windshield as the car whisked steadily down the two-lane highway of what had once been the famed Route Sixty six; like many other things in life it's time had come and gone. . . The old two-lane highway was in disrepair, the new interstate highway had left it in almost a state of abandonment seldom traveled, now stood as a gruesome reminder of how change and modernization left behind in its tracks those things that did not work or could not change.
Mike Harrington realized while traveling this lonely stretch of highway, that he must adapt or like this now lonely stretch of highway, he'd surely be left behind, abandoned by the changing times. . . But he was making that adjustment. He felt uncomfortable and it troubled him although he realized that change had become crucially important if he were to continue to be an active part of the scientific community.
Having served the scientific community for twenty years and only being retired for six months, he was now coming out of retirement at age forty-seven. . . He'd already taken his first initial gigantic leap into the new millennium, having taken his initial interview for a position online, via the internet and was now in route for a formal interview.
A sudden gust of wind sent huge tumbleweed sailing across the highway and colliding momentarily with his windshield, the wipers complained loudly as the tumbleweed made contact with them briefly, before continuing its journey across the highway into the vastness of the desert beyond.
The incident unnerved him and he'd pulled over on the shoulder of the road to regain his composure, the impending interview already had him wound as tightly as a spring. . . It wasn't so much he needed to the position, after his twenty year tenure with Lafayette Aerospace he had a hefty retirement package.
The importance of this position was to keep his mind and body active, the one thing his retirement package had left out. Renewable Resources L.T.D. was a new giant in the aerospace industry, a company started by his son with his financial inheritance contacts, business savvy and had the same arrogant persistence to achieve and succeed as his father had before him.
Having regained his loss of composure, Mike pulled off of the shoulder of the road and continued his journey onward to his ten o'clock interview. . . The drizzling rain had no turned into a steady downpour.
With his wipers working diligently to keep the windshield clear, the motor in his M.G. Midget purred like a kitten as the small black sports car raced down the two-lane highway. . . The car itself was a status symbol of a person having achieved success.
