In a practical age, and among practical people, the first requisite in Religion to the average man is that he should be able to find in it something to do him good. There is perhaps hardly any couplet which so concisely expresses the popular opinion as to the real region in which true Religion can be tested than those well-known, if somewhat shallow, lines of Pope : ' For modes of faith let priests and bigots fight, He can't be wrong whose life is in the right.' And in the same way many will regard the upright life of an unbaptized person as an unanswerable argument against the validity of Baptism, and the integrity of an infidel as destructive of the obligation of a creed ?forgetting that the strong man who can dispense all his life with medical aid does not thereby prove the worthlessness of all medical science; nor that the man who never complains outwardly of ill-health necessarilyshows that he was free from inward pains and complications from which medicine might have relieved him. Still the great underlying truth remains, that there must be something wrong about a Religion which does not help a man to be better in his moral life; that a pure and upright life does bear witness to a religious influence of one kind or another; and, further, that one main aim of Religion is to help a man to steer safely through the almost overwhelming difficulties which surround his life from his cradle to his grave, and to make him something more than one who pronounces shibboleth with an ecclesiastical accent; a conscientious, ho...
