Im Mittelpunkt der Geschichte stehen rivalisierende Gangs im Elendsviertel Five Points in New York City in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Scorsese entwirft dabei ein vielschichtiges Porträt der handelnden Personen und der Motivationen, die sie antreiben - von existenzieller Angst und dem Streben nach Macht. Auch in diesem Werk, das Scorsese bereits zu Beginn seiner Karriere nach seinem ersten größeren Erfolg "Mean Streets" [Hexenkessel] (USA 1973, Martin Scorsese) zu planen begann und nur aus finanziellen Gründen erst knapp 30 Jahre später auf die Leinwand bringen konnte, setzt der Regisseur auf die Motive, Symbole und Strukturen, die seine Filme seit jeher ausgezeichnet haben und die sein Oeuvre so unverwechselbar machen. "Das Regiewerk von Martin Scorsese kreist um die Themen Schuld, Religiosität, Gewalt und Verbrechen und die Be- trachtung der US-amerikanischen Nation und Gesellschaft." Deshalb überrascht es auch nicht, dass Scorsese die Idee zu diesem Film bereits so früh hatte, denn in ihm werden all diese wichtigen Themen und Motive seines Schaffens verbunden und auf einen gemeinsamen Ursprung zurückgeführt. Der Regisseur selbst bestätigt das: "Diesen Film wollte ich seit Jahren machen, denn hier geht es um die Geschichte New Yorks. Und die Geschichte dieser Stadt ist letztlich die Geschichte Amerikas" (Shone 2014, 197). Diese Themen sind deshalb so zentral für ihn, weil er sie als grundsätzlich angelegt in der amerikanischen Gesellschaft betrachtet.
