Bien que Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) n'ait jamais quitté sa terre natale des Pays-Bas, il a, par l'ensemble de ses peintures, dessins et gravures, changé le cours de l'histoire de l'art en Occident. Son oeuvre prolifique comprend des scènes religieuses, historiques et profanes, ainsi que l'une des plus extraordinaires séries de portraits et d'autoportraits de l'histoire.

Les oeuvres de Rembrandt se remarquent par leur texture, leur luminosité et parce qu'elles sont le résultat d'une observation fine. Apparitions surprenantes, surgissant soudain dans l'ombre d'une rue, ses sujets sont baignés d'une lumière particulière contrastant avec un arrière-plan lointain, sombre, et se révèlent autant dans leur présence physique que dans leur psychologie. Personnages bibliques ou mythologique, puissants mécènes ou citoyens anonymes, leurs traits sont fidèlement restitués, mais le peintre perce aussi le secret de leurs pensées et de leurs sentiments de telle sorte que le moindre récit intemporel tiré par exemple de la Bible, comme l'épisode de David et Bethsabée, atteint la puissance d'un drame humain. La gloire de Rembrandt coïncide avec les riches années du Siècle d'or néerlandais, période de grande prospérité aux Pays-Bas. Il fut soutenu par de puissants mécènes, mais était avant tout porté par une profonde fascination pour les gens.
