Outre les thèmes de prédilection qui s'y retrouvent, ces autoportraits sont innovants et expérimentaux dans leur forme même. Des rais de lumière diffuse réchauffent une épaule tandis que des pans entiers de son visage se fondent dans l'arrière-plan obscurci. Ciselées dans la patine fraîche d'huiles couleur terre avec un calame en roseau, des boucles rebelles semblent réfléchir la lueur qui les touche et se tordent, énergiques et turbulentes, en réplique à la surprise qui se lit si souvent sur le visage de Rembrandt.
