Bis zu seinem Tod mit 63 Jahren fertigte er über achtzig Selbstbildnisse in Form von Gemälden, Radierungen oder Zeichnungen an. Sie stellen damit etwa ein Zehntel seines gesamten Schaffens dar. Diese Sammlung von Selbstporträts bietet für Kunsthistoriker die einmalige Möglichkeit einer Art Autobiografie. Besonders in den späten Werken wird ein schonungsloser Umgang in Darstellungen des Körpers und seiner Unzulänglichkeiten deutlich. Das Alter und die damit einhergehenden Makel und Gebrechen scheinen für den Künstler besonders interessant gewesen zu sein. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit soll nicht sein, einen Überblick über die zahlreichen Selbstporträts in Rembrandts vollständigem OEuvre zu vermitteln. Nach einer knappen Vorstellung der außergewöhnlichen ersten Selbstbildnisse als Vergleichsmöglichkeit soll anschließend vielmehr der Fokus auf das Spätwerk gelegt werden, da diese Schaffensphase nachhaltig als tiefgreifend und bemerkenswert gilt. Die Selbstbildnisse sollen außerdem kurz in das Lebenswerk eingeordnet und ihre besondere Be-deutung erläutert werden. Vorweg soll das Leben des Künstlers paraphrasiert werden, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf den Verlusten des Privatlebens gelegt wird. Hier ist herauszustellen, ob er seine intimen, vielleicht verzweifelten und einsamen Gedanken möglicherweise unterbewusst im Werk auslebt, oder sich mit voller Absicht skizzenhaft und mit deutlichen Alterserscheinungen darstellt. Die Literaturlage zum Thema ist ausgeprägt und vielseitig. Das umfassende Leben und Schaffen Rembrandts wird in unzähligen Abhandlungen herausgestellt. Im Be-sonderen beschäftigen sich die Publikationen ausdrücklich mit den Selbstbildnissen des Niederländers da dieser Bestandteil seines Wirkens als meisterhaft angesehen wir
