Es ist leicht, verfügt über einen hohen Heizwert und findet als Energieträger in der Industrie bereits seit über 90 Jahren Anwendung. Manche sprechen schon lange vom "Kraftstoff der Zukunft" (Geitmann 2011), der nun in der Realität angekommen zu sein scheint. Während der Russische Angriffskrieg auf die Ukraine die Anfälligkeit der europäischen Energie- und Ressourcenversorgung aufzeigt, haben die steigenden, hohen Energiepreise erhebliche Auswirkungen auf Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft, zusätzlich zu der außerordentlichen wirtschaftlichen Lage aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie. Mit Blick auf den Klimawandel und dessen globaler Folgen einigten sich die EU27 auf ein gemeinsames Klimagesetz, welches das Emissionsreduktionsziel von Treibhausgasen bis 2030 auf mindestens 55 % gegenüber den Werten von 1990 festsetzte. Außerdem soll die EU bis 2050 klimaneutral werden. Bei der Erreichung von Klimaneutralität und energetischer Unabhängigkeit ist der Ausbau der erneuerbaren Energiequellen und sektorübergreifende Dekarbonisierung zentral. Die möglichen Einsatzszenarien von Wasserstoff sind weit gefächert. Neben einer industriellen Verwendung von Wasserstoff ist der Einsatz von Brennstoffzellen in stationären- und mobilen Systemen vorgesehen, z.B. in der Hausenergieversorgung oder Straßenfahrzeugen. Langfristig soll die Industrie zu einem wichtigen Verbraucher von Wasserstoff werden, in dem dieser als Energieträger bei der Bereitstellung von Prozesswärme oder der Substitution fossiler Rohstoffe genutzt wird. Wasserstoff kann als alternativer Brennstoff Öfen anfeuern, Kohle in der Stahlindustrie ersetzen oder bestimmte Prozesse der Chemieindustrie klimafreundlicher gestalten.
