About the Book

Ms. Simone's art class is studying the life and works of the impressionist artist, Pierre-August Renoir. Mary is fascinated with Renoir's paintings of cafés and outdoors sights. She wishes to meet with Renoir and his friends in France, to capture her own Parisian scenes and truthful moments. Together with her friend Manet, they say the magic word three times: "Wackadoey, wackadoey, wackadoey," and then away they blow to the past to meet Renoir in Montmartre, Paris France. The artist teaches them how to capture snapshots of real life quickly, with fluid brush strokes before the moment and light is lost. Mary and Manet also learn how the artist observes and paints flickering lights, children, women and very happy folks. Mary returns to her art class and paints what she observed in France. To her illustration, she adds her friends Renoir and Manet, in a candid position. The outcome is superb! Read A Rendezvous With Renoir and you will experience a "Manet Day," learn to use your imagination to improve your art, and feel coo-cooey wackadoey. So what do you say?
About the Author: I studied economics and sociology at Queens College in New York, followed by an internship at Lehman Hutton on Wall Street. As a buyer and merchandiser for Le Firme and later for Akris at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City, I returned to my more creative passions. I teach and co-run an art program called "Learning to Look" at the Schechter Day School. I introduced MAW to Cohen's Medical Center and have the absolute joy of watching children immersed in art, while forgetting their pain and their illnesses - even if just for two hours. Watching them experience their own "imaginative ways," impresses in me the power of creativity and artistic expression. Art helps children use both sides of their brains, embracing expression and imagination to create something wonderful. Teaching art history to youngsters in a way that encourages their creativity and interests rather than being intimidating is what inspires me to teach. The love I have for seeing their eyes brighten and their ideas form is what motivated the creation of MAW and its series of art history books, teachers' curriculums, coloring books, songs and online projects. Paris, Manet, Mary, Mays, Justine and Ms. Simone all derive from my wish to bring the gifts of imagination, music, fun and facts to children. My own daughter with the same name inspired the character of Paris. The rest of the MAW kids were inspired by my boys Jordan and Logan, as well as the children that I have watched learn and grow while teaching them about art and creativity. Ms. Simone is a reflection of how I teach and display art throughout the classroom. I want children to be able to experience art history in a way that inspires them to begin their own creations. All children (and adults too!) should have the experience of being told "Great job," "You can do it," and "Bravo!" Making art gives children just that opportunity: to express, learn and feel a sense of accomplishment. Charitable work is a central part of my life. I am a member of the Women's Health Committee at Katz Women's Hospital; a member of the Autism Committee on Long Island; am involved at Sunrise Day Camp, a camp dedicated to children with cancer; and a member of the UJA-Federation. I enjoy spending time with my husband and children. Most nights, when all are asleep, I can be found sitting at the computer dreaming about the next adventure for my six characters, I now call family. Have a fun and wackadoey experience! Sima Levy
