Bachelorarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich VWL - Mikroökonomie, allgemein, Note: 2,3, Universität Bayreuth, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Es dürfte wohl kaum jemanden geben, der noch nie etwas von Auktionen als Form des Handels gehört hat. Die meisten Menschen dürften Versteigerungen mit dem Online-Auktionshaus eBay in Verbindung bringen. Dabei ist diese Form der Zusammenführung von Angebot und Nachfrage keine Erfindung des Internetzeitalters. Bereits vor Hunderten von Jahren, bis zurück ins Jahr 500 v. Chr., wurden Auktionen durchgeführt. Von Nahrungsmitteln über Kunstwerke bis hin zu Sklaven kam alles Erdenkliche unter den Hammer. So versteigerte die kaiserliche Garde im Jahr 193 n. Chr., nachdem sie den Kaiser Pertinax ermordet hatten, das römische Imperium für 25.000 Sesterzen pro Prätorianer (Gardenmitglied). Der Gewinner der Auktion, Didius Julianus, wurde zum Herrscher über Rom erklärt. Allerdings konnte er die Machtfülle nur kurze Zeit genießen. Bereits nach zwei Monaten wurde Julianus getötet und bekam damit die wohl frühste Form des "winner´s curse" zu spüren (Krishna 2002: 1). In den Fokus der Ökonomen rückten Auktionen erst reichlich später. Als die OPEC in den frühen 70er Jahren den Ölpreis erhöhte, entschied die US-Regierung, dass das Recht auf Ölbohrungen in Küstenregionen versteigern werden sollte. Zur Ausgestaltung von solchen Auktionen wandte sich der Staat an Ökonomen. Gleichzeitig engagierten Firmen diese als Berater zur Entwicklung geeigneter Bietstrategien (Varian 2003: 310). Für die breite Öffentlichkeit wurden Auktionen erst Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts, mit Auftreten des Online-Auktionshauses eBay, interessant. eBay wurde 1995 in Kalifornien gegründet und zählt mittlerweile mit über 90 Millionen aktiven Nutzern zu einem der größten Handelsplätze im Internet (siehe eBay 1).
