Quelques jours apres la mort d'Auguste, on fit porter dans la curie quatre rouleaux scelles qu'Auguste avait deposes, d'apres Suetone, aupres des Vestales. Le premier contenait son testament prive, le deuxieme donnait les ordres relatifs a ses funerailles, tandis que le troisieme developpait la situation dans laquelle il avait laisse l'Empire. Sur le quatrieme se trouvaient les Res Gestae qui rappelaient tout ce que l'empereur avait fait pour le peuple romain. Auguste souhaitait que ses Res Gestae soient gravees sur deux steles de bronze a proximite de son mausolee. Rien n'est moins sur car les deux inscriptions de Rome ont disparu et seules ont ete conservees des copies envoyees dans les Provinces d'Asie Mineure. Auguste y relate ses exploits quand il s'appelait encore Octave, comment a 19 ans a peine il leva une armee et eut raison de Marc-Antoine, comment il etendit la puissance romaine, et restaura la Republique en devenant empereur. Malgre le style aride et factuel impose par l'inscription, les Res Gestaesont pour nous un document precieux, tant par les informations historiques qui y sont contenues que par le portrait que le grand homme peint de lui-meme.
