Voila pres de cinq cents ans que naissait a Bruxelles celui que l'on surnomma le pere de l'anatomie moderne . Andre Vesale et son uvre sont a l'origine de centaines de pages critiques, d'eloges et de polemiques depassant largement le cadre medical. Abraham Bosse utilisa les figures anatomiques des traites de Vesale pour enseigner le dessin du corps humain en perspective. Baudelaire, fascine, reva devant des planches du squelette laboureur vendues sur les quais de la Seine. Les origines familiales de Vesale comme les circonstances de sa mort continuent de susciter la curiosite des historiens. Ses livres furent copies dans toute l'Europe pendant deux siecles au moins. Il reste a montrer l'apport de Vesale sur le plan scientifique. Le Resume des livres sur la Fabrique du corps humain, que nous editons et traduisons aujourd'hui, fut publie par Vesale en 1543. Ce n'est pas seulement un resume en matiere d'anatomie destine aux etudiants, mais un ouvrage d'une indeniable originalite de methode, qui construit le savoir a partir de l'observation et du raisonnement. Pour comprendre ses innovations, mais aussi ses limites, nous avons replace Vesale dans son milieu, dans l'enseignement universitaire de son temps, a Padoue en particulier et dans le contexte des livres d'anatomie de la premiere moitie du XVIesiecle, ecrits en latin. Nous avons aussi recense le plus de copies et d'imitations possibles qui ont assure la perennite de l'ouvrage. La conception meme de l'Epitomeest originale: le livre comprend un texte descriptif et une serie de planches anatomiques legendees, independantes du texte, que le lecteur est invite a manipuler, a decouper pour fabriquer un corps humain en trois dimensions. Si le texte descriptif se limite au minimum de connaissances a acquerir par l'etudiant, les planches mettent sous ses yeux l'integralite du savoir anatomique enseigne par Vesale. L'ecriture reconstruit ainsi une continuite topographique dans les elements du corps disjoints par la dissection. Notre traduction du texte et des legendes des planches est la premiere traduction en francais moderne. On constatera que la terminologie anatomique mise au point par Vesale est en grande partie a l'origine de la nomenclature anatomique internationale contemporaine. Celle-ci est systematiquement mentionnee, en meme temps que le commentaire historique, philologique et anatomique (incluant identifications, explications et hypotheses) necessaire a la comprehension. Nous avons pu identifier pratiquement toutes les structures signalees par des lettres sur les planches. La description de certaines de ces structures de dissection particulierement difficile revele chez Vesale une extraordinaire acuite du regard. L'extreme complexite des reports de lettres de grandeurs et d'alphabets differents a ete resolue de la maniere la plus satisfaisante possible dans le cadre du livre. Chaque image a ete divisee en plusieurs sections, qui ont ete agrandies et sur lesquelles ont ete reportes en rouge les signes peu visibles sur l'original. Ainsi, le lecteur pourra apprecier la precision scientifique du dessin en meme temps que sa beaute. L'Epitome peut donc etre considere, comme le voulait Vesale, comme une introduction aux differents livres de la Fabrica, que nous traduirons et publierons selon les memes principes.
