About the Book

Mordechai Gichon - Herodes - Traianus - Hadrianus. The Military Angle (p. 15-22).The period from Herod to Hadrian is of major importance in the history of the Jewish people. The article studies the reigns of Herod, Trajanus and Hadrian, particularly the military aspects of Herod's policy, the Jewish revolt under Trajanus and Hadrian's policy towards the Jews. Saskia Roselaar - Battle formation in the Roman Republic: parade show or practical purpose? (p. 23-54).This article investigates the formation of battle in the training necessary to achieve competence in these formations. It investigates how the Roman army was drawn up for battle, and how this battle order functioned to the army's advantage. Secondly, in order to see how soldiers might have learned the required skills, it examines the ancient evidence for training practices, and identifies some of the problems that new recruits face by looking at re-enactment groups portraying ancient marching and battle training. Finally, it examines descriptions of battles in historical narratives. Thus it will become clear what kind of manoeuvres were used and what training would have been needed in order to make soldiers competent in executing these movements. Marco Rocco - Viri militares of the third century in the Historia Augusta. A review (p. 77-100).The aim of this contribution is to present a review of the viri militares listed in the third century's Lives of the Historia Augusta, both real persons and those who certainly or probably were invented. The expression viri militares is applied only to non-senators who appear in some way associated to offices of a military nature. At the end, it is argued that the pro-senatorial author of the Historia Augusta avoided extending his negative judgment on the army to the highest levels of the "military caste", to which belonged many contemporary political authorities.
