About the Book

Kathryn GUTZWILLER, Apelles and the Painting of LanguageArt historical anecdotes and literary ecphrases offer evidence that Apelles consciously addressed, in both his technical writings and his painting, the paradoxical nature of art as a silent presence activated by the linguistic paradigms employed by viewers. The ecphrastic tradition preserving Apelles' theoretical analysis of his painting is discussed in three sections, each examining different aspects of the interrelationship of the verbal and the visual: Herodas' Mimiambus 4 on realism and truth, Lucian's Calumny on allegory and falseness, and a series of ecphrases and anecdotes on verbal reaction to the corporality of paint as a means of reifying Apelles' Aphrodite Anadyomene as a living goddess. Un'interpretazione dell'Inno omerico ad AfroditeThe Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite seems to be an hymn sui generis for the peculiarity of the mythological tale and for the apparent lack of didactic purpose. It dials with the complex and delicate problem of immortality, tries to find an answer to this issue (as also Homer and Pindar do, each in his own way) and comes to an original solution.John SCHEID et Paul VEYNE, Proprius (Virgile, Ecl. VII, 31?; Aen. VII, 331)Dans Virg., Ecl.
