Ich hätte sonst den Drang, Polen zu erobern." Dieser provokante Ausspruch Woody Allans gibt Anlass zum Nachdenken: Warum wird Wagner indirekt mit Adolf Hitler in Verbindung gebracht? Welche Qualität hat diese Aussage und wie kann sie wissenschaftlich begründet werden? Hat Wagners Abneigung gegenüber Juden in seinen Werken Eingang gefunden? Auch wenn Woody Allan seine Ansicht vielleicht mit einem Augenzwinkern kundgetan hat, sollte, um für mehr Klarheit und Aufklärung zu sorgen und bestehende Vorurteile zu vermeiden, diesen Denkansätzen nachgegangen werden. Daher wird im Folgenden zunächst Wagners Antisemitismus erläutert. Vor allem am Beispiel Heinrich Heines, zu dem Wagner während seiner Pariser Zeit Kontakt hatte, wird gezeigt, wie sehr sich seine Gesinnung, spätestens beim Verfassen seines Pamphlets "Das Judentum in der Musik", änderte. Das Hinzuziehen des Aufsatzes ist außerdem wichtig, da - so viel sei vorab schon gesagt - in Wagners Operntexten bezüglich der Figurencharakterisierungen kein expliziter Hinweis auf eine Judendarstellung zu finden ist. Auch in Erläuterungen zu seinen Werken hat Wagner sich dazu nicht definitiv geäußert. Deswegen lassen nur die von ihm verfassten Aufsätze, Briefe und glaubhaft überlieferte Aussagen Rückschlüsse auf seine Werke und den darin dargestellten Figuren argumentativ zu. Als Ausgangspunkt soll daher "Das Judentum in der Musik" dienen, um aus "Der Ring des Nibelungen" Alberich und Mime, zwei in der Forschungsliteratur oft als jüdisch deklarierte Charaktere, unter dem Gesichtspunkt des "jüdisch-Seins" näher zu betrachten.
