Flaubert se fue a la guerraFlaubert encontraba pájaros rotos en la ventana, tristes pájaros rotos muriéndose al azar. Pájaros como quien dice chuecos, diezmados en la paz de una memoria que acaso felizmente no tuvieron, tristes pájaros rotos, apestosos, simplicios, desplumados, borrachos, evacuantes - todos a la vez lastimeros y flacos, redondos y podridos. En principio había sido un hecho insólito, aislado, esporádico, incidental, pero luego fue tornándose frecuente con más frecuencia, agravándose con inaudita frecuencia. De la ventana del balcón los pájaros pasaron a morirse a la sala, de la sala a la antesala, de la antesala al comedor de lujo, del comedor de lujo al comedor de la terraza, de la terraza a la cocina y de la cocina a las habitaciones (incluyendo la de los huéspedes), y de aquí al cuarto de servicio y al área de lavado, al depósito de carbón y al zaguán. Finalmente coparon la biblioteca, el salón de música y la sala de los muertos, y ahora Flaubert vivía fastidiado por el estropicio de plumas y el olor a carne chamusquina en todos los rincones, cuando no manchas de sangre en las paredes y disparos provenientes del recinto militar contiguo. Discusiones y disparos, aullidos y disparos, ladridos de los perros a la luna -a la luna pálida- y otra vez disparos y disparos y disparos. ¿No se podía pedir un poco de cordura?En el mejor de los casos, los disparos provenientes del recinto militar contiguo aplastaban a los pájaros contra las paredes exteriores y allí terminaba todo, salvo que la pintura y la madera se deterioraban por obvias razones de lógica aristotélica. Peor si en su vuelo final los pájaros caían a los pies de Flaubert y se quedaban mirándolo con tiernos, desamparados ojillos pajariles moribundos. Peor si caían sobre el piano durante las prácticas de piano y defecaban, aleteaban, se sacudían sobre sus papeles de música como si retozaran en el juego de la muerte. Peor que peor si se metían a morir al desván por los huecos del cielo raso o en los intersticios de las paredes, porque nada era peor que el olor de la descomposición de los cuerpos atrapados en las paredes de aquel inmenso caserón de madera -inmenso, sí-, edificado con apego al más espurioestilo victoriano.
