About the Book

It has long been recognized that atherosclerosis tends to develop in certain areas of the artery. Blood flow is thus considered to play an important role in such development. However, the direct mechanisms of the influence of blood flow on atherosclerosis are controversial. Recently, a number of active studies in this field have been carried out around the world. This volume consists of the contributions to a symposium held on the subject and offers a report of latest findings.

Table of Contents:
1 Fundamental Observations on Human and Animal Atherosclerosis.- Establishing the Hemodynamic Determinants of Human Plaque Configuration, Composition and Complication.- Distribution and Endothelial Morphology of Atherosclerotic Lesions at Bifurcations and Curves of Human Cerebral Arteries.- Observations on Carotid Bifurcation Atherosclerosis in Human Cadavers.- Localization of Lipids and Cell Population in Atheromatous Lesions in Aorta and Its Main Arterial Branches in Patients with Hypercholesterolemia.- Underlying Morphological Changes in the Arterial Wall at Bifurcations for Atherogenesis.- The Relationship Between Intimai Thickening and the Hemodynamic Environment of the Arterial Wall.- The Role of Haemodynamics in the Proliferative Lesions of Atherosclerosis.- Secondary Flow and Atherogenesis.- 2 Fluid Mechanics of Blood Flow in Atherogenesis.- The Utility of Correlations Between Model Flow Studies and Vessel Pathology in Describing Atherogenesis.- Flow Patterns and Preferred Sites of Atherosclerosis in Human Coronary and Cerebral Arteries.- Early Atherosclerosis and Pulsatile Flow in the Human Carotid Bifurcation.- Flow Separation and Horseshoe Vortex in a Tube with Side Branches During Pulsatile Flow.- Flow Studies in True-to-Scale Models of Human Renal Arteries.- Unsteady, Separated Laminar Flow in Non-Uniform Vessels.- Effects of Phase Relationships on Wall Shear Stress in Curved and Straight Elastic Artery Models.- Wall Shear Stress Distribution Patterns in Arterial Stenosis Models Measured with an Electrochemical Technique.- Intraoperative Evaluation of Blood Velocity Waveforms in Different Coronary Artery Bypass Graft.- The Role of Flow Separation and Its Prediction in Arterial Flows.- Numerical Simulation of a Blood Flow in a Stenosed Tube.- Sinusoidal Oscillatory Flow in a Strongly Curved Tube.- Visualization of Velocity Profile and Measurement of Wall Shear Stress in Branched Square Tube Using Laser-Induced Fluorescence Method.- 3 Cellular or Tissue Reactions to Blood Flow.- Cellular Reactions to Blood Flow.- In vivo Responses of Endothelial Cells to Hemodynamic Stress.- Morphological Changes in the Flow Loaded Canine Carotid Artery.- Ultrastructural Changes in the Endothelial Surface of Rat Carotid Artery Induced by Blood Flow Load.- Distribution of Wall Shear Stress and Microfilament Bundles in Endothelial Cells in Canine Coronary Artery in vivo.- Adaptive Enlargement of Arteries in Response to Increased Flow and Increased Intimai Plaque.- The Effect of a Fluid-Imposed Shear Stress on the Mechanical Properties of Cultured Endothelial Cells.- The Effect of Fluid Shear Stress on the Growth Behavior of Vascular Endothelial Cells in vitro.- Turbulence, Disturbed Flow, and Vascular Endothelium.- Effects of Blood Flow on Development of Atheromatous Plaques at an Experimental Inter-Carotid Anastomosis (Model Carotid Bifurcation).- Arterial Tortuosity.- 4 Transport Phenomena and Underlying Mechanism of Atherogenesis.- Wall Mass Transport and Other Mechanisms Underlying Atherogenesis.- The Effect of Centrifugal Force on Glycosaminoglycans Synthesis and Cell Proliferation of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells in Culture.- An in vitro Assay System for Measuring Both Vascular Permeability and Endothelial Cell Damage.- Endothelial Injury and Accumulation of Cholesterol Ester Derived from Circulating Lipoproteins.- The Modulation of Transport Through the Arterial Wall.- Effect of Tissue Hypoxia on the Development of Atherosclerosis.- An Hypothesis for the Localization of Atherogenesis and Its Relationship to Endothelial Regulation and Transport.- Models of Endothelial Cell Junctions.
