Dans "Le Roman et la Vie", José Carlos Mariátegui, intellectuel péruvien de renom, se penche sur l'intrigue captivante de l'Amnésique de Collegno, une histoire vraie qui a fasciné l'Italie et le monde pendant près d'un siècle. L'auteur, plus connu pour ses analyses politiques1, avait l'intention de tenter une incursion littéraire avec cette oeuvre. Mais son décès prématuré ne lui a pas laissé le temps de publier cette nouvelle.

La saga de l'affaire de l'Amnésique de Collegno débute en 1926, lorsque la police arrête un homme désemparé, incapable de révéler son identité. Hospitalisé à Collegno dans un état dépressif-confusionnel, il devient le protagoniste involontaire d'une pièce où réalité et fiction se confondent. La publication d'une photo dans les journaux italiens conduit à son identification comme Giulio Canella, un intellectuel respecté de Vérone porté disparu depuis la Grande Guerre. Cependant, une lettre le désigne comme Mario Bruneri, typographe Turinois et criminel notoire. Les procès qui s'ensuivent, une danse entre la lumière de la vérité et l'ombre du doute, voient la balance de la justice osciller capricieusement. Mais malgré des preuves et des témoignages contradictoires, la justice décide d'attribuer en dernière instance le nom de Bruneri à l'inconnu. La famille Canella, au coeur de cette polémique qui enflamme l'Italie et qui fait l'objet à son paroxysme d'une couverture médiatique quotidienne, est forcée à l'exil au Brésil, où Giulio est finalement reconnu. Des décennies plus tard, le Vatican réhabilite l'identité de l'inconnu en reconnaissant qu'il s'agissait de Canella. L'affaire semblait entendue. Mais, en 2014, l'émission italienne Qui a vu ? a réalisé un test ADN sur deux des descendants de l'Amnésique de Collegno qui semble accréditer la thèse selon laquelle Canella était bien Bruneri, sans que cette preuve ne soit définitive. Toujours est-il que dans les années 1920 et 1930, l'affaire prend tant d'importance qu'elle devient politique. Des personnalités de groupes italiens libéraux et de gauche prennent position en faveur du nom de Canella tandis que les partis traditionalistes penchent plutôt en faveur d'une imposture de Bruneri, le typographe. Mussolini inquiet des proportions prises par l'affaire et ayant peur que celle-ci déclenche une vague de protestation anti-cléricale fait pression sur les médias pour réduire la couverture de l'affaire.

Mariátegui, fasciné par les intersections entre la littérature, la politique et la société, trouve dans cette histoire un terrain fertile pour son exploration. Ce cas, qui oscille entre tragédie et farce, reflète les préoccupations centrales de l'auteur: la lutte des classes, l'identité, et la quête de justice dans une société en proie aux conflits et aux contradictions. Il voit dans l'affaire de l'Amnésique de Collegno l'occasion de romancer ce cas en en faisant une métaphore de la condition humaine, un miroir des luttes sociales et politiques. Mariategui montre également, dans ce roman, sa fine connaissance de la politique et de la littérature italiennes, un pays dans lequel il a vécu.
