Er sagte das, was jeder seiner Leser zu sagen sich sehnte, aber er sagte es so, wie sie es niemals vermocht hätten. In ihm kulminiert die ganze Geistesrichtung, die wir als die Zeit der Aufklärung bezeichnen; sie kulminiert in ihm, aber sie erschöpft sich auch in ihm. Da erblicken wir neben Voltaire einen Mann ganz anderen Schlages, dem es nicht darauf ankommt, die Bestrebungen seiner Zeit in klarsten und reinlichsten Umrissen festzuhalten, einen Mann, der eine andere Welt, eine neue Zeit, die nur er ahnt, im Busen trägt und der sich nun bemüht, diese Fülle der Gesichte der Mitwelt zu künden, dessen Sprache, bald pathetisch, bald ermahnend und scheltend, mitunter einen fast grotesken Eindruck macht, der den Mitlebenden nicht als ein Heros erscheint, sondern als eine Mischung von Narrheit, Fanatismus und Paradox
