Dos días después en Los Cedros, la residencia oficial del presidente Ladrón de Guevara, desde la suntuosa Sala de Recepción, un recinto adornado con pinturas clásicas, voces agitadas se filtraban por la ventana hacia el amplio patio rodeado de góticas columnas. El presidente, sentado precariamente al borde de su enorme silla de piel, como una mosca sobre las nalgas de un elefante, se reclinaba sobre el impresionante escritorio presidiendo sobre dos caballeros de trajes negros estilo pingüino: el Secretario del Interior con su bigote encerado, y Álvarez, el gobernador de Chapingo, de barba cuidadosamente delineada y nariz rojiza por el vitiligo. En segunda fila se encontraba Antonio Robledo, barriga hinchada por la cerveza, jefe del Estado Mayor, una ensalada de listones y condecoraciones cubriendo su pecho y las cinco estrellas de general en las solapas. Rígido y firme, gorra bajo su húmedo sobaco, Robledo empezó su reporte: El sargento Reyna y un grupo de guerrilleros disfrazados de enfermeras, pechos, piernas y bigotes afeitados, recogieron a los técnicos de televisión que se escondían de contrabando en La Capirucha y los trasladaron, ojos vendados, al cuartel general. Barcos había aceptado la oferta de la importante red de noticias Pan Europe Television para grabar una entrevista y un documental sobre su lucha, para distribución internacional. Siguiendo a Reyna en una discreta vagoneta, dos ambulancias de la Cruz Roja avanzaron hacia el sur por caminos secundarios. Sin embargo, no pudieron evitar detenerse ante un retén de control del ejército federal y policía. Los guerrilleros, escondiendo su carga humana y disfrazando su nerviosismo con sangre fría y palabras sensuales y prometedoras, lograron burlar la inspección de los enamoradizos uniformados.En la sala de su cuartel, se pasea de lado a lado con obvia nerviosidad el comandante Barcos, mientras que uno de los presentes, el capitán Trancazo, lo observa con curiosidad: Por el modo como roe su pipa y por su comportamiento está claro que algo importante fastidia al comandante, dice, en sotto voce. El otro presente es el teniente Maravilla. Los tres barbados militares, Barcos y sus dos aides-de-camp, comparten la misma indumentaria: trajes de campaña verde olivo a la moda de los revolucionarios latinoamericanos, boinas rojas a la Ché Guevara, y botas brillantes como espejos a base de grasa shinola. Enfundada, portan una pistola 45 automática de las asignadas a los oficiales del VEP. Águilas doradas, la insignia de Jefe Supremo, cuelgan de las mangas, solapas y boina del comandante.El teniente Maravilla agachado sobre la mesa, con su atención absorta en el mapa de operaciones, empieza su sombrío aunque honesto reporte de la situación bélica. -Comandante: La máquina federal, pujante, Camino a la victoria y triunfante, Mientras que nuestras fuerzas, vencidas, No alcanzan a sanar sus heridas.Material, armas de años pasadosNulos son contra ejércitos dotadosDe armamento futurista y letalQue rápido se suma al arsenalQue dolosas bajas han causado. -Consciente estoy de esa realidad. Pero para escapar de sus garras, cuento con la solución, un refugio ni muy cercano ni muy lejano donde nunca nos hallarán, -afirma el comandante, iluminado su gesto como por un reflector. -¿Y se puede saber dónde es eso? -pregunta Trancazo.-Del sombrero anda sacando Un conejo por los piesSerá jefe del ComandoPero mago no lo es, piensa Maravilla.-El refugio de los Estados Unidos de América, -responde solemnemente el comandante-. El alba ilumina los objetos. Los espíritus de las criaturas brillan. En los minutos antes de clarecer, un ambiente festivo, no visto desde el último campeonato nacional de balompié, impregna el aire húmedo de San Cristóbal. Las luces artificiales del estadio pierden su lustre y ceden al sol el derecho de iluminar.
