"Wollt ihr den totalen Krieg?" - Joseph Goebbels Frage an das jubelnde Publikum im Sportpalast 1943 ist ins kollektive Gedächtnis eingegangen. Doch schon die Fassade dieses Paradebeispiels der erfolgreichen Massensuggestion beginnt unter dem prüfenden Blick zu bröckeln: Nicht nur, dass die ins ganze Reich gesendete Begeisterung des Publikums bei Goebbels Rede keinesfalls spontan, sondern vielmehr sorgfältig inszeniert war, auch die Hörer an den Radios hegten ihre Zweifel. So machte bald nach der Rede in Deutschland die Frage nach dem größten deutschen Bauwerk die Runde sowie die dazu passende Antwort: 'Der Sportpalast, denn in ihn geht angeblich das ganze deutsche Volk hinein'. Ist die These von der Verführung des Volkes durch die Propaganda also haltbar? Handelt es sich dabei nicht vielmehr um eine Rechtfertigungsstrategie, die dem Vorwurf des Mitläufertums und der Mitschuld an den Verbrechen des NS-Regimes die Unmündigkeit und Manipulierbarkeit des Volkes entgegenstellt? Die vorliegende Untersuchung geht diesen Fragen auf den Grund. Sie analysiert das Programm des NS-Rundfunks und seine Organisationsstruktur und blickt darüber hinaus auf den Umgang der Rezipienten mit dem staatlich gelenkten Medienangebot. Da viele Hörer der Propaganda misstrauten und sich alternative Informationsquellen suchten, wird für einen Vergleich auch das deutsche Programm der BBC herangezogen.
About the Author: Johannes Kaufmann (geb. 1981) ist Historiker und Journalist. Er studierte Chemie, Geschichte, Germanistik und Philosophie an der Technischen Universität Braunschweig, an der er 2007 seinen Abschluss machte. Als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Historischen Seminar der TU Braunschweig vertiefte er seinen Schwerpunkt in der Militär- und Mediengeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts und veröffentlichte einzelne Aspekte aus seinem Dissertationsprojekt zu den Medienstrategien und Medienbildern der israelischen Militärführung von 1956 bis 1982 in einschlägigen Fachzeitschriften. Seit 2012 arbeitet er als Wissenschaftsjournalist für die Braunschweiger Zeitung.
