Das im letzten Drittel des 11. Jahrhunderts vermutlich von einem Tegernseer Geistlichen geschriebene Ruodlieb-Epos gilt noch immer als eines der grossen Ratsel der mittelalterlichen Literatur, da es sich weder von seiner Sprache noch von seiner epischen Technik her in die literarischen Traditionen der Zeit einordnen lasst. Es handelt sich um den ersten mittelalterlichen Versuch, ein frei erfundenes weltliches Epos zu schaffen und in hochst eigenwilligem Latein ein anschauliches Bild von der Alltagswirklichkeit der Zeit zu vermitteln. Das Werk ist nur fragmentarisch uberliefert. In den erhaltenen Teilen der Munchener Handschrift ist vermutlich das Autograph des Dichters zu sehen. Das 1830 in St. Florian entdeckte Doppelblatt einer zweiten Handschrift, die unmittelbar vom Original abgeschrieben ist, bildet eine wertvolle Erganzung der Lucken des Munchener Codex. Der erste Halbband mit der kritischen Ausgabe des "Ruodlieb" enthalt die Erstveroffentlichung des 1981 von Karin Schneider, Munchen, entdeckten neuen Fragments und einen revidierten Text der bislang bekannten Bruchstucke. Im Vergleich zu den alteren Editionen sind ca. 120 neue Lesungen und mehrere hundert abweichende Erganzungsvorschlage verzeichnet. Uber beides, die Lesungen und die Erganzungen, geben zwei Apparate Aufschluss. Ein dritter Apparat enthalt wortliche Zitate des Dichters aus der ihm bekannten lateinischen Literatur und Wendungen mit Ahnlichkeitscharakter. Der letztgenannte Apparat zeigt, dass der literarische Horizont des Dichters - bei aller Eigenstandigkeit und Eigenwilligkeit - doch entschieden weiter war, als man bisher annahm. Die Einleitung zur Textausgabe gibt einen Uberblick uber die bisherigen Editionen, schildert die Entstehung der Munchener Handschrift, ihre Zerstuckelung und Wiedergewinnung und erlautert die Prinzipien der Text- und Apparatgestaltung. Ausgezeichnet als eines der "Funfzig Bucher 1986" der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
